Dr. Regina Benjamin to be tapped for Surgeon General Post

Posted by: onemom on: July 13, 2009

President Obama will announce this morning that he has selected 31 Dr. Regina Benjamin for Surgeon General. I will write more about this selection later, but for now, here are some articles about Dr. Benjamin:

There are already rumors that she is a pro-abort spreading across the internet, but I have not found confirmation one way or the other.

To be honest, I’d be surprised if she wasn’t a pro-abort. I rather doubt that Pres. Obama is taking his tips from the NRLC’s board of directors.

I haven’t found a lot about her yet, either. We’ll see …

Well, that’s true Wickle. I’m curious about this nomination. OK, she’s spunky and rebuilt her destroyed medical office more than once and put herself into a lot of debt to do so (but she’s also received $11 million in “research” money but I’ve not located any research published by her). Yes, she’s an MD and has her MBA, but I’m not seeing anything in her experience that puts her ahead of countless others to be qualified for the Surgeon General position. I have a lot of questions and the answers are not forthcoming.

I live in her area and I’m still in shock and awe. If more doctors were like Dr Benjamin we probably wouldn’t even have a healthcare crisis.

I am of the same opinion as Wickle. I doubt very seriously that she is anything other than pro-abortion. President Obama has made his feelings about abortion known too many times for him to be nominating someone to this position that isn’t.

The original source of the rumor is from http://www.lifenews.com/nat5208.html, but I cannot find any primary sources to prove that she stated that doctors should be trained in performing abortions. I’ve search in Questia, as well as Google. I contacted the LifeNews editor about this, who simply said, “AP is the primary source. I don’t imagine you will find much online given the old date.” I find this to be a rather vague response. He could have provided a specific date or other relevant information to help me find it on my own.

Benjamin did serve on the Board of Directors for Physicians for Humans Rights, an organization that advocates for international legalization of abortion. However, it is possible that she disagreed with that particular position, while supporting the PHR’s other positions.

I am ardently pro-life, but it is imperative that we keep our facts straight. So far, I don’t believe the rumor can be substantiated.

S. Ama, there is no rumor. The White House has already confirmed that Benjamin agrees with Obama in support of abortion.

I gave you the response I did in my emails to you because I get 1000s of them a day and don’t have time to write a dissertation in response to every request for information. We cited Benjamin’s comments in our story and accurate sourced AP. There is nothing false about what we wrote in our article.

But I can tell you this, I will certainly not respond to further private emails from you knowing that you will post the content from them without my knowledge or permission. That’s tacky.
