(disclaimer: I know I missed a couple questions/responses so this is not a verbatim/complete transcript of today’s call with Governor Huckabee)
About a year ago, we were having monthly (sometimes weekly) blogger calls with then Presidential Candidate, Mike Huckabee. I have missed those chats with the former Governor of Arkansas, but today had the opportunity to join in another call as he embarks on a three week tour for his book “Do the Right Thing” which is being released tomorrow (November 18, 2008).
MH: Welcome everybody. I just did an interview with Sean Hannity for his radio show and I am taping “The View” tomorrow. Then starting a 56 city tour. This book is not about lamenting the past or where we are going, it is a book laying out a plan to get to work and build up our country. This book is honest and I take you behind the scenes of my campaign and letting you know the answers to questions you may have had about the campaign.
Chapters: The best government of all
The politically homeless (maybe the RNC elite don’t have room for us and what do we need to do to address that?)
The FOCONS (false conservatives)
Let them buy stocks
stories from the trail about the people who really made this happen
Open up for questions:
Jenn: does this book mark the start of your next campaign?
MH: Well, it’s a little early for that. I don’t think speculation at this point means a lot. I won’t say that I will or won’t, because I honestly don’t know. We did not lose elections because of our principles, but because we failed to govern by those principles.
Matt (Townhall): how does this book differ from the others?
MH: the content drills deep into the process of running for President, but more importantly the principles of the conservative movement, what did we do wrong and where do we go from here? This is not the end of conservativism, but an opportunity for us.
Tina: how do you get past partisanship and to discussion about the issues?
MH: we need to move the focus from what we believe to WHY we believe it and why it’s important.
Michael (Baptist Press): Comment on the role of conservative leaders in the RNC
MH: I’m convinced that they are writing the obituary while the body is still breathing. If it hadn’t been for the cultural conservatives, it would truly have been a landslide. It was the cultural conservatives that kept McCain in it as much as he was. This was not a landslide. We didn’t lose because we’re pro-life, but because we started acting like it didn’t matter anymore.
Scott (Texas): are you devoting much of the book to energy policy?
MH: I touch on it in the chapter “Big Ideas” and how it’s not about creating more regulation but that we turn the private sector loose to develop all forms of alternate energy sources.
Nick: Why didn’t you spend more time in SC which gave Thompson a foothold there?
MH: Maybe we would do it differently if we had to do it over, but one thing that was happening to us was that we were only able to play in the evangelical audience in SC and the media presented us as a demographically limited candidate – Michigan gave us an opportunity to play outside the evangelicals, and that if we didn’t play there at all, the media would have limited us even more. Why did Thompson stay in – was it a favor to McCain, I don’t know.
OneMom: Two questions … first what are your thoughts for the RNC chair? Second, what do we need to do to repair the fractured base of the republican party?
MH: Supporting Chip Saltsman for RNC chair …. the RNC needs to learn how to run a frugal operation, and he knows how to use technology to create a party of the future that nobody else running can do. Chip understands the media platform and we need to get in that game.
This was a tough climate for the republicans. As I look at the overall issue, I believe it was because we did not take strong stands on economic policy and on social issues. We should have come out strongly against the bailouts and shown clear difference between the republicans and dems. We got so caught up with issues that weren’t resonating with the people … they were worried about keeping their jobs, and we should have addressed that without supporting the bailouts.
Jason: Some are saying your book is very negative.
MH: There are times when I address facts – such as why certain evangelicals did not endorse me – they can say those parts are negative, but they are facts, not bad feelings on my part. The campaign is over, I’m not reliving it, I’m just painting a picture of what we did that worked, what didn’t work, and especially how ordinary people with little money made this a spectacular campaign and carried us to number two.
Lori (Iowa): People think the social conservatives are not important anymore because they think we are just one-issue voters.
MH: Read my book and it will be clearly explained. I wrote the book to show that doing the right thing is the basis for all liberty – including fiscal. If we do not govern from a moral center, the whole thing will break down.
Closing comments:
I want to thank everybody for your time and get a chance to talk with you. I’ve missed these regular meetings with our bloggers that we had during the campaign. Please read the book and as you hear criticisms about the book, you can take on the role you did during the campaign of clearing up those misconceptions. These book stops are going to be very tight, but I do hope to say hello to as many of you as possible. Thanks to everybody to being here, God bless … and happy reading!
It was good to chat with Governor Huckabee again. I wish him well in his travels the next 3 weeks and urge all of you to get a copy of his book “Do the Right Thing“.

Thanks so much for posting the transcript. It was a great call.
And I just saw that you are also doing reviews for Thomas Nelson! I will have my review of Moon Shines Down up on Wednesday after my review editor (grandson) gives his opinion.
Please keep me in the loop. If Thompson had dropped out before SC, Huckabee would’ve won it and he would’ve been on his way to the nomination. I don’t harbor any resentment to Thompson, but it’s a shame it went down the way it did. Huckabee 2012.
Blessings come by the most precarious ways. From the tone of the Book and Governor Huckabee’s Dateplanner, We will see our Quest come to life in Congress. Thanks Kerry
Thanks for posting this transcript! I’m greatly looking forward to seeing Gov. Huckabee at a book signing this week. “Fritz” said that he’s not harboring any resentment towards Fred Thompson, but _I_ am. In my opinion, Fred Thompson is one of the MAIN reasons we lost this election. Thompson DELIBERATELY went after only Mike in SC, even while knowing that he (Thompson) was dead in the water and would have to quit the race a few days later.
Mike is the only GOP candidate who could have given Barack Obama any serious competition. McCain is pro-life, and I thank him for it…but he is NOT a gifted communicator like Mike is, and when you’re up against a Great Hypotic Jedi Mind-Control candidate like Obama, you’ve got to be able to communicate effectively, connect with real people, and — most importantly — EDUCATE and INFORM about conservative principles and why they’re not only “the right thing to do,” but better for the voters themselves. When it comes to this crucial element of campaigning, Mike Huckabee is the most gifted leader I’ve seen since Ronald Reagan.
Fred (“I’m not dead, I just look that way”) Thompson is the reason we got stuck with his 72-year-old friend McCain…and lost the White House. I will never forgive him for his deliberate sabotage of Mike Huckabee in SC.
Great questions Huckabee Fans!
If you get a chance, please post your question and answer on the About you comment section of 2012 Huckabee Fan Club under your profile.
Other fans that read your profile would be interested to know, you just talked to the soon to be 45th President of the United States of America!

Hello, I’m the Lori from Iowa. Thank you for the information. I was picking up my daughter from school during this call so I missed some of the details. One question. I thought someone asked a question about how to come back at someone who says Huckabee is a “pro-life liberal”. Do you remember that question and what Mike’s answer was? Thanks!
Thanks for posting this. I did not get to be in on it as it took place, but I enjoy reading it. I kkep trying to send emails to encourage Gov. Huckabee to promote his book and foster a better relationship with our U.S. Military personnel. How about a book signing at Fort Belvoir or Quantico Marine Base for example? If the military folks get to know Mike, they will surely see what a great Commander in Chief he would be!
Thanks for writing this up, OneMom. This book is a really important event for the things that matter so much to us – and for the man we believe can lead in those things!

Wow! My heart leapt a little with encouragement when I saw Kathleen Summers’ comments about Californians and her request for Mike to come out here to California on his book tour. I had been wishing Mike would come out here too, but just figured it was hopeless. But you know, I think Kathleen is right, the vote on Prop. 8 (happily) DOES show a stronger state of morality among the people here than had been realized before. (Pray for us, for all our sakes, that God forbids ANY court from overturning the vote of the people on this amendment!) Thanks for the encouraging word, Kathleen. Put us on your tour if you possibly can, Governor! We need you! We’ll be praying for you!
Gov Huckabee never keeps from being more amazing all the time. This is perfect timing as we just keep working on the party reform while things are still fresh in our minds. His style is the brightest star, and continues to inspire thinking that we can accomplish a new unity in our party soon.

I pray that God would grant Pastor Huckabee the grace that is in Luke 21, 15 For I will give you words and wisdom that that none of your adversaries will be able to resit or contradict: and for all who read this.
We need to take time, to let God be God in our lives and wait on him.
Thank You
When I listen to Gov. Huckabee speak, it’s like I come up for a breath of fresh air! I will continue to pray for this country and all of the people. I personally believe that the book of Revelations is unfolding before our very eyes and that’s okay. Focused prayer and focused Christian people is what this country needs. President-elect Obama has and will continue to have my prayers, as well as all other people in his administration. I would like to see Gov. Huckabee run in 2012 for President and will gladly help in anyway possible. In God we trust.
Heard you on the call yesterday! Did you notice that the Gov never just says “Republicans” but Republicans and Conservatives”
His inclusive nature and tone is why is probably back for round two.

I am sorry, but I did not vote for Mike Huckabee. I voted for Duncan Hunter two days before he dropped out. If I had it to do over, I would have voted for Mr. Huckabee. If Mr. Huckabee will run again, I WILL vote for him. I really enjoy his TV show on Fox News.
I know that we often lament that Thompson over-stayed his welcome in SC, but have you ever thought about what would have happened if Giuliani stayed in the race past Florida? He would have split the liberal state’s votes w/ McCain and Romney on Super Tuesday. (New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, California, etc. ) Then, we wouldn’t have had to hear the “Mathematically Impossible” Mantra ( http://www.renewamerica.us/columns/graham/080303 ). After Huckabee won Kansas, and Louisiana, and had a good showing in Washington, he likely would have won, Virginia, Texas, and Ohio, Then he still had states like North Carolina, Kentucky, and Nebraska in his back pocket. We’ll all be ready next time. Huckabee 2012.

Thanks for posting this. I am the “Jason” who asked Gov. Huckabee to respond to the Time and Politico article that presented the negative aspects of the book.
