Michigan Governor to veto ban on partial birth abortion

Posted by: onemom on: June 4, 2008

Supporters of the right to life in Michigan (and across the country) need to stand today and let Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm know that it is unacceptable to veto the bill passed by the Michigan legislature to ban partial birth abortion in the Great Lakes State. Here is a portion of what her office has said:

Gov. Jennifer Granholm is expected to veto a ban on partial-birth abortion passed Tuesday by the Michigan House of Representatives.

The Michigan Senate passed the bill on January 22 by a 24-13 vote.

Liz Boyd, a spokeswoman for Granholm, said the governor will veto the bill because it does not address the health of the mother.

“It was a political move and we don’t support it,” Boyd said. “We believe the Legislature should be working on things that matter to people.”

First of all, let the Governor know that this is something that “matters to the people”. It’s disgusting that Granholm’s office would suggest that killing babies is not an issue that matters to the citizens of our state. Second, the “health of the mother” argument is absurd. Please read HERE for a greater understanding of this.

This is the second time that Gov. Granholm has vetoed against the will of the people of Michigan. Please help us stop her this time.

Just out of curiosity, didn’t the Federal Government already pass a PBA ban back a few years ago? Is this Michigan bill a precaution in the event that Democrats strike that law from the record or are PBAs actually legal in Michigan right now?

Kevin – yes they did, but it describes a very specific procedure and there is some fuzziness about what states can do or not do. I’ll try to put together a more detailed post about the laws and how the abortion industry works around it tomorrow.

I hope that you can get rid of Mrs. Granholm some day; she is nothing but trouble.

Ohio Joe – well, if the conservatives had stepped up to the plate and voted in 2006, we’d have Governor DeVos now instead of this liberal.

[...] bloggers like OneMom and The Maritime Sentry are up in arms, but the Governor appears [...]

Thanks for the information, OneMom. I’ll see if I can post this up on our blog, and our TeenPact Google Group.

im trying to do a research paper on the subject of abortion. my question is, did Granholm veto the ban?

Jen – thanks for asking. I published the follow-up just a couple minutes ago (thanks for reminding me too!)

It’s not just Granholm that stands in the way of your ban, it’s people like me, who have lost a loved one because of pregnancy complications. Several people, myself included, sent letters and made phone calls to Granholm to veto the bill, because of its vague language. No one is *pro-abortion* but some of us believe that a woman has more of a right to her body than a fetus. And when you people say this extremely rarely used abortion procedure is never used to save a mother’s life, you are either uninformed, or misinformed by your peers.

TJO – I am sorry for your loss. Did you click the link in my post? If you had, you would have read the following:

When the life of the mother is truly threatened by her pregnancy, if both lives cannot simultaneously be saved, then saving the mother’s life must be the primary aim. If through our careful treatment of the mother’s illness the pre-born patient inadvertently dies or is injured, this is tragic and, if unintentional, is not unethical and is consistent with the pro-life ethic. But the intentional killing of an unborn baby by abortion is never necessary.
