What’s a Meme? (updated)

February 13, 2008 · 7 Comments

(here’s the answer to the question “What’s a Meme?“)

Well, I still don’t know what a “meme” is, but I’ll go ahead and follow through with this little game of tag from my friend Wickle. Here’s what I’m suppose to do:

  • Pick up the nearest book of 123 pages or more. No cheating!
  • Find Page 123.
  • Find the first 5 sentences.
  • Post the next 3 sentences.
  • Tag 5 people.

Without moving, there are two books within equal distance to me, so at the risk of breaking a rule somewhere, I am going to give the “next 3 sentences” on page 123 for both of them.

The first is “The World of Pooh” by A. A. Milne:

p.123, sentences 6 – 8: “So now,” he thought, “somebody else will have to do something, and I hope they will do it soon, because if they don’t I shall have to swim, which I can’t, so I hope they do it soon.” And then he gave a very long sigh and said, “I wish Pooh were here. It’s so much more friendly with two.” (Piglet, caught in a flood)

The second book is “The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association:

p.123, sentences 6 – 8: Place the footnote number at the end of the quotation, after any punctuation. Enclose a copy of the letter of permission with the final version of the manuscript.

The general rule governing APA style on the use of numbers is to use figures to express numbers 10 and above and words to express numbers below 10.

OK, it is not like me at all to pass these types of things along, but it is kind of fun to see what book people have nearby, so here’s my tag list:

We will now return to our regularly scheduled blogging …

(thanks Wickle for the diversion).

This is One Mom’s Husband – Hey, can I play?
I looked around my desk area and spotted a book on the top shelf: HIS NEEDS HER NEEDS Building An Affair-proof Marriage by Willard F. Harley, Jr. Page 123, sentences 6-8, “If a couple can “bite the bullet” and lower an unrealistic standard of living, that action frees the husband to set realistic economic objectives regarding the family’s basic financial needs. But as long as their wives keep working so that together they can finance the big house, big car, and everyone’s credit-card habit, where is the incentive to cut back? I realize what I say will not be popular with many couples.”
I looked again and noticed in the next cubby hole, probably less than an inch further away, my Gideons New Testament that I received on Nov. 16, 1964. Page 123, sentences 6-8, Luke 4 Verses 21 & 22, “21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. 22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph’s son?”
Please excuse me skipping the tag list since I do not have a blog of my own.

Thanks for the tag, Kerry. I’ve posted a few sentences out of the stack of books by my desk.

    Kerry,

I will try to post my sentances tonight, when I get back home from work. I do have a question about it. Does the Bible count? I used to read a lot, but not much anymore and the only two books within reach are the Bible and a book called “The House”, by Ted Dekker and Frank Peretti. Since it is quite spooky, I am not sure about posting it. Outside of the Bible, it is the last book I have actually read through.
