No majority at WV convention … 2nd vote underway

Posted by: onemom on: February 5, 2008

From CNN, regarding the West Virginia GOP Convention today:

Romney and Huckabee both addressed the West Virginia Republican convention Tuesday before state delegates began voting.

To win West Virginia’s 18 national convention delegates, a candidate must receive a majority of the votes by the state delegates. A first round of voting by the delegates failed to produce a majority for any candidate, and a second round of voting involving the top three candidates — Romney, McCain and Huckabee — was to start Tuesday afternoon.

Before the voting began, Romney, told delegates that wins in California and other Super Tuesday states would put him in position to win his party’s nomination.

“It will indicate the conservative voices in our party are standing up and saying, ‘wait a second, we want to make sure that this party does not leave the house that [former President] Ronald Reagan built,” Romney said in Charleston, West Virginia.

During his pitch to West Virginia Republicans, Huckabee said he would deal with the terrorism threat.

“Today we have a serious threat to our freedom in Islamic-fascism,” he said. “The fight we’re in is not just whether your children will have a better future. It’s whether your grandchildren are going to be dead or alive, because these fanatics are willing to kill every last one of us.

“Your next president better understand that.” Video Watch Huckabee address the convention ยป

I’ll update as results come in.
