My visit with Mike Huckabee

Posted by: onemom on: November 9, 2007

I found out Wednesday evening (November 7th) that 10 minutes had been found in Governor Huckabee’s incredibly packed visit to Michigan on Thursday, November 8th. I would have to be in Owosso and ready to meet him at 4:25pm.

No problem. Owosso is an easy hour drive from here. No babysitter though, so the little one (she’s 5) would have to go with me.

We left plenty early and arrived around 3:30pm. I was expecting a quiet hotel lobby and was surprised to see that the fundraiser for Gov. Huckabee was being held in the lobby of the Comstock Inn. That meant that Hannah and I would stand and wait. While waiting, I met Chad and Luke … both working with the campaign. They knew who I was and why I was there. They explained to me that when the Governor arrived, he would immediately have a media availability right there in the lobby with several local television stations and newspapers. After that they told me they would take me upstairs where I could chat with the Governor in a quieter atmosphere (I was relieved to hear that).

While we were standing there, many people were coming and going, but at one point the doors to the hotel opened and though I didn’t see Mike Huckabee right away, and I could sense that he had arrived. The entire atmosphere of that lobby changed in that split second. Hannah certainly sensed it as she grabbed tight onto my leg and comforted herself by saying “it’s ok, it’s just people”.

The Governor immediately moved into position with one television crew and began one interview. Finally there was also a small break in the crowd and Hannah said “there he is! there’s president Huckabee!”. It’s a little hard to explain to her that he’s not the President yet, but is running for President. I do happen to agree with her sentiment though.

I have no idea how many interviews he did in that 20 minutes in the lobby. There were so many people it was hard to tell when he had moved from one news crew to another. But he did it pleasantly and comfortably with absolutely no visible signs of stress.

Quickly, we were escorted to an elevator, to a room on the second floor, and told to wait while the Governor finished up. In a few minutes, he entered the room with staff members Chad and Drake, along with some onlookers who stood in the doorway. I immediately felt my heart stop and couldn’t think of my own name. He greeted me by name and with the most sincere handshake I’ve experienced in a long time.

He asked about my husband, Allan who he has met twice already. Then I introduced him to my daughter Hannah who had been working on spelling a word on her doodle. He got down on her level, talked gently with her, asked her what word she was working on and then proceeded to help her figure out the next letter she needed. The room was too small and I was too close to capture the moment on my camera, but it is an image that I will cherish clearly in my heart, always.

Drake took my camera and took a picture of me with the Governor. Then we sat down and started chatting.

The first thing I noticed as we started talking was that he looked me straight in the eyes … no looking around, no looking down. He had done the same thing while talking with Hannah. I have met some other politicians in my life … none at this level, but none have ever looked directly at my eyes. Actually, I find it a rather rare quality in much of society as people are less direct and forthright.

After my initial “heart-stopping” moment, I realized that I was completely comfortable talking with this man who truly could be the next President of the United States.

He was warm and genuine. He spoke with deep emotion about his appreciation of my work for him here on the One Mom blog, and of all his bloggers and supporters. It was quite clear to me that he had actually read my blog over these past months … that is amazing to me.

About this time, Hannah came over and declared she wanted the spot in the middle of the couch and that she wanted to sit by “the Huckabee”. She climbed over him and took her place. He gave her a boost and spoke quietly to her for a moment.

He asked me why I had chosen to support him and to go the extra step to become a blogger for his campaign. I talked with him about my concerns that our nation is in a precarious position in which we will either rise up from, strong and secure, or we will falter greatly. I explained to him that I support him, because I have to … I have to because of Hannah, and for all future generations. He did not miss one word I spoke to him. He knows the urgency I speak of as a parent … it is why he is running for President. While some run out of lust for power, Mike Huckabee is running because he loves this country, he loves the people of the United States and wants to work for us and with us to make this country strong and great and respected again around the globe.

This was not an opportunity to try and glean any inside campaign information or to ask really tough questions. I did ask him how he is doing. He said he is sleep deprived (I couldn’t tell by looking at him, but with his schedule I can imagine!), but that he is doing fine … physically and with his walk with the Lord.

We talked a bit about education, and how some conservatives continue to nail him because he actually went to talk to the NEA (National Education Association … of which between 30 and 40% are republicans), and that his vision to restore art, music and physical education back into the schools in all grades causes people to label him a liberal politician who wants to pour huge amounts of money into education and take away parents rights. Public education is the only option many families have (especially in this tough economy), I continue to be amazed at conservatives who blast Mike Huckabee for promoting education.

We also talked about homeschooling (which I am a homeschooling mom). He is the only Governor to ever appoint a homeschooling parent to the State Board of Education. He firmly believes that the administration of schools needs to be at the state level and at the district level. He also firmly believes that as President it would be vital to work with the states to assure that parents had the freedom to make the education decisions for their children – if that’s Public Schools, then let’s make sure they are the best they can be, but that the government at any level must never forget that the children are the parents’, they do not belong to the government. Parents rights to choose public, private, parochial, charter, and homeschool must not be taken away.

Somewhere in this part of the conversation, his staff was “closing in” – it was obvious to me that his schedule was very tight and they needed him to move to the next thing on the list. Being a man of incredible graciousness, he did not abruptly end our conversation, but finished our discussion on education.

He again thanked me (he also signed my copy of his book “From Hope to Higher Ground” …. what really amazed me was that without having to ask or to check, he wrote my name and spelled it correctly! People I have known for years have not bothered to learn how to spell my name, and yet this incredibly busy man, surrounded by people practically every minute of every day, knew how to spell “Kerry”!). He again got down on Hannah’s level and talked with her for a moment. At that point a pastor and his wife were ushered in for a brief “hello” – I was trying to leave, but Governor Huckabee stopped me and said “oh Pastor (and I do not remember his name), let me introduce you to Kerry, she is one of my wonderful bloggers, and you must meet her”.

Mike Huckabee … a man of conviction … a man of grace … a man of vision … a man of hope for the United States of America. We must elect this man our next President. For Hannah.

Respectfully submitted …

Kerry

Wonderful story, Kerry! Thanks for sharing. =D

Cool, thanks for the story… sounds like meeting him was quite a great experience. I would love to do so myself someday.

I need to go to bed, but I wanted to ask: in what Michigan town do you live? I’m 50 and in Houston, TX now. But, I was in the Detroit area from age 11 to 19 and back again for a year when I was 20. I’ve been back several times and my best friend from when I was 11 is still my best friend and still lives in the Detroit area. There’s a lot I like about Houston, but I really miss the fall up north. I’ve also lived in Missouri, Kentucky and New Hampshire since I was young. All were prettier, but Houston has good food and lots of concrete, glass, and Republicans… It’s also flat and has a world-class medical center, which worked out well because I developed multiple sclerosis and my balance has been bad for about ten years. :-)

If Huckabee is in it when Texas’ primary comes, he will win it.

Wow, Kerry! What a blessing for you and your daughter! I must say, if anyone deserves the honor, you do! Again, thanks for your wonderful blogs!

That is the most amazing article you have ever written, Kerry. It really tells the story about what kind of man Huckabee is. Thanks for sharing.

Wow Kerry that is GREAT.

I also got to meet Mike for a photo op yesterday just a few seconds but what a good guy. Thanks for sharing your story.

What started out as a faith based campaign will end in victory for a faith based candidate

OH WOW!! I am so excited that you met Mike, what moment that must have been for you. Thanks for telling about your visit, you wrote about it so well, I felt like I was there too…

Kerry– this is a great story. It truly portrays Huckabee in a way that most folks won’t see unless they actually meet him. I’ve met him a few times and have come to appreciate those very same qualities as you do. It’s amazing how he can just zero in and make you feel like you’re the only other person in the room!

On a completely different note, there’s a good piece over on the Brody file. I particularly like the section on faith (it reminds me of his FRC speech): http://www.cbn.com/CBNnews/266712.aspx

Kerry,
What a wonderful experience! I’m so glad you finally got to meet him. Great recreation of the experience!
Cheers,
Christian

Wow, that’s awesome. Thanks for sharing! You’re meeting with him confirms every “good vibe” (wow, I sound like a hippie liberal!) I’ve gotten from him.

You’re daughter’s a hoot. “It’s okay, it’s just people.” Great!

Great story! Thanks for sharing! This is precisely why I am a Huckabee supporter.

Kerry,
I sure enjoyed your first hand account of your meeting with Mike Huckabee. Fantastic! Thanks for all you’re doing. You motivate all of us to do more, not just for Mike, but for this wonderful country we live in.

This article really touched me. Huckabee all the way!

Kerry,

I got to meet Gov. Huckabee in DeSoto, TX, and can 100% vouch for what you just said. He is so kindhearted and personable! I had better watch out, or I will be telling you the nitty gritty of such a treat and take up a couple miles of web-page! I am only 18 so it was the experience of a lifetime.

WE ARE SO BLESSED TO HAVE HIM AS A CANDIDATE.

America does not deserve a president like him. America deserves Hilary Clinton. If God will have mercy on us, he will give us Mike Huckabee, and we must pray every day for mercy and healing for our country.

( we ought to get together and compare experiences! Yes, I plan to tell my grandchildren about it! : ) )

That sounds so much like when my daughters and I met the Governor (the exception being that you had more time). I too found him to be very warm, engaging, and gracious. When he and I were speaking a woman walked into the conversation and told him who she was….someone who had been a part of his youth group from 20 years prior. He remembered her right away, and spoke with her briefly, then returned to our conversation and went to to comment how wonderful it was to meet someone from his youth group 20 years ago and told me a little about her. This man’s memory is so sharp, and he managed to handle it all with tact and grace. I too noticed that I felt an incredible calm when speaking to him, as if it was a next-door neighbor. He also made a point to acknowledge each of my 3 daughters…even though they obviously aren’t a vote (but they say they are). Yes, Gov. Huckabee looked me dead in the eyes too while we spoke, and it felt real. I think he makes every single person he meets a priority in that moment from a genuine place in his heart. I explained how I first became a supporter through his endorsement from Michael Farris of ther Home School Legal Defense Association, and he went on to say that Farris has been a close friend of his for many years. Farris has written an excellent book called What A Daughter Needs from her Dad. I glad they have kept company…you know, birds of a feather and all. One of the highlights of my life was telling Gov. Huckabee that it was so important to me that I could support him without apology to my children. You should see the picture of us together….people always comment on the hugely ridiculous smile on my face. It was THAT great because I knew that “Hope for America” was more than just a slogan….it was the truth!
Treva

Pray and praise for you in JESUS CHRIST. I believe you are the man to lead U.S. Will you work for a God Amendment for prayer , bible, christian principles”? way;en

This is amazing,
it shows what a genuine and personable guy Gov. Huckabee is.
We need an honest politician like Mike in the white house!

What a wonderful Post. I really hope to meet him when he comes back to Georgia again. Thank you for sharing your moment in time with us. That was wonderful. The post has touched my heart. Keep up the great work!

Kerry, thanks for sharing your experience. I am going to a house party in NH tomorrow and am looking forward to meeting him and hearing him speak. As a mother of two young boys, I am so happy that there is a candidate that I can trust and enthusiastically support 100%. Go Huckabee!!! May God richly bless you and your campaign. My prayers are with you.

What a wonderful story. I want my turn to meet him!! Was wondering if you thought of posting the grassroots effort to raise one million for Mike on Nov. 20. I learned by reading on Mike’s website about it. It’s http://Nov20ForTheChildren.com Thanks for the story and hopefully for posting the site.

kerry, loved your article on mike and your blog. keep up the great blog on mike, sincerely

georgia for huck

Kerry,
I was brought to tears. To think of the alternatives running for POTUS. Thank you so much for sharing. I am anxiously awaiting an opportunity to meet Gov. Huckabee myself. Though I’ll be thrilled seeing him from across a crowded room or a quick handshake. This, folks, is why we must pray God will continue to lift this man up.

Very nice. Your story just confirms what I hear from so many other places, that Huckabee is the genuine article. And that’s why we need him to be our next president.

This is one of the best blog posts I have ever read. Thank you for sharing this with us. Governor Huckabee is a great man and has inspired us in so many ways. I am happy as well to see his recognition of how powerful his supporters can be for his cause. Thanks again,

Mark

Kerry- what an awsome post. Thanks for sharing your experience: its too bad mos of us can’t relate to you.
One thing that kept coming to mind though was how he knew you personally almost- it just reminded me of the many New Testament stories of how people were drawn to Jesus and just how personable and patient and kind Jesus is to us sinners. It’s like Mike, though not Jesus, does possess some of these humble kind-hearted qualities.

thanks again
God Bless

Kerry, Thanks for your insight, which only confirms me and doesn’t surprise me at all. May our heavenly Father protect this man and his family and bless our nation with our leadership. Thanks again for your work.

This is a great post!! One mom – you really have a talent for writing. I felt like I was there meeting him with you. I know Mike Huckabee and this is the man I know. He is the same wonderful gracious man with everyone he mets.

Howdy Kerry,
What a wonderful experience and thanks for sharing it with us. Would you consider posting my bumper sticker offer somewhere on your site? I’m actually losing money on each transaction but wanted Huck Supporters who desired only 1 or 2 stickers to have that option. Here’s my text below:

Wow! What an amazing story. I only hope to be able to meet this incredible man some day. He really is (in my opinion,) the only hope America has to turn things around before the return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. God has promised us (Christians) one last great harvest of souls before his return, and I think that with this man’s vision and leadership it may very well happen. I will be praying for Mike every day. I hope you’ll join me. For Kerry. For Hannah. For America.

What a wonderfully worded blog. You made me feel like I was right there with you.. I am amazed that you even found the words to say. I would have probably been so overwhelmed, I would have been stumped what to say. Thanks for sharing. I forwarded it to my homeschooling group.

WOW, Kerry! thanks so much for sharing your heart and visit of the conversation with Mr. Huckabee. Your article is quite inspiring and I was thrilled by reading it. After some of the disappointing endorsements of late, sharing your experience is like a fresh summer breeze to refresh our hearts and souls. God’s very best to you and yours.
Warm regards, much love and great respect
Frankie in FL.
Duet. 17:15You shall surely set as king (president) over you him whom the Lord your God will choose. One from among your brethren you shall set as king (president) over you; you may not set a foreigner, who is not your brother, over you.

Well done. Keep up the good work.

Great story! He was exactly the same with my wife and I when we met him in Washington DC a few months ago. Looks you in the eyes… Listens to what you have to say… and responds with great care and thought. Absolutely no rush whatsoever. I felt like he would talk to me for as long as I wanted to. One of the most remarkable, humble, and genuine man I’ve ever met. THIS is who we need as our next President.

It is great to feel represented. I hope the governor also meets with all veterans groups that ask him for a meeting.

Kerry – I was deeply touched by your story. From your words, it sounds like the compassion of Christ exudes from him. We desperately need him to guide our country. I have never been involved in politics, but this year I can’t help myself. I believe the Holy Spirit is prompting a lot of us to do whatever we can, even if it brings us out of our comfort zone! I think Mike Huckabee is our best choice for President! We need God’s favor over this country with all of the looming threats on the horizon. I think Mike Huckabee will give our country honor again, because he has high a standard for doing what is right, and has the wisdom bestowed from above. He has an innate goodness that makes him so likeable, which the people need to bring this country together again.

What a blessing to hear your story about this special time with Mike. God has spoken to me in a dream that Mike must be lifted up daily in prayer and we, his followers, must stand in the gap as the assault from Satan expands and the stress and weariness from the campaign trail sap his energy. I am a member of a prayer chain on Huck’s Army and also read the Proverbs for the day each morning and pray for Mike, his family and his staff. Thanks for your blog.

That is really great.

I am so glad that you took the time to share this wonderful experience with your readers. I know that you will never forget this experience, and your precious little one will be able to look back on this day and remember she met this great man!

Thanks again!

God is GRAND!!!

Kerry:
What a wonderful story. Thanks so much for sharing it with us! I even got a little choked up reading it.

Now, let us all continue to pray for Governor Huckabee, and continue to step up our efforts on his behalf. We’re circulating petitions here in Southern IL beginning next week to get him on the ballot here in IL for the February 5th primary.

We’re having trouble getting help in Chicago…please pray that we get some organization in Chicago very soon!

What an awesome story. I hope my daughter and I get the same priviledge of meeting him some day. When my daughter says good bye to someone on the phone or mails a letter she always adds “Vote Mike Huckabee”. She don’t get into politics but she loves the Lord and she knows he does too. I would start a blog but I’m computer illiterate. Keep up the great work! God bless.

Kerry,
Thanks for sharing your story of your visit. Getting a first-hand account of how Mike H. is in person is worth 100 articles in the MSM.
The Huckster is the man for 2008!

I don’t know much about Mike, but after I took one of those surveys to find out which candidate best fit my values, my wife and I were both given Mike Huckabee as first place. Thank you for posting this, and for your blog.

2. We are ready with petitions so if you can help gather signatures in the 10th congressional district, please contact me at lsmith610@aol.com.

The one thing I noticed about Mike Huckabee is he was not speaking to get applause. He was not wasting energy on it. He kept his crescendo down as much as we let him. Many times we could not help ourselves. His entire focus is to educate with the theme being how we are needing to change course of this Mighty Nation! On these planks he educated those gathered which included many legislative and staff leaders. It is our need to do the same with our neighbors.

At the following site, will you find the gathering of Huckabee supporters busy at work planning an effort of getting Mike communicating through DVDs, some choreographed, by simply getting a copy and duplicating it and passing them out with a business card.( or one of many ways available). There is much at Hucks Army, including education on the several positions, planks, Mike is speaking to.
