Hi Everybody …
The debate begins in a few minutes here in Michigan. I’ll be updating this post as events merit. Most importantly, let’s all remember to be praying for Gov. Huckabee as he participates in this first debate that includes newcomer Fred Thompson.
Kerry
Here we go …
First question goes to Fred. He sees no reason to think we are heading for a recession. He thinks that there are pockets in the economy who are having difficult. (Long pauses while looking for words).
Good line from Romney: he said he was nervous about debating here today because he thought Gov. Granholm would put a tax on the debate before they were done.
McCain did not even address the tax question … he talked around it, but did not address the heavy tax burden on the middle class. If they don’t give this question to Huckabee, I will be upset. When pushed for an answer, McCain said the tax system is fair.
Matthews to Huckabee: Won’t the fair tax cause people not to spend? Mike: Chris you know Americans better than that! We love to shop! This will stop taxing productivity and allow us to export products instead of jobs. I want everyone to know that is watching this that while the economy is good for most people on this stage right now, I know that for many people watching right now -especially right here in Michigan – that you are working two jobs just to put food on the table. And to those people who are struggling, I hope that we can address these issues tonight on this stage. (Mike so far, is the only one who spoke to the people directly and not just to Chris Matthews).
Tick tick tick … it’s been several minutes since hearing from Huckabee. Right now Rudy and Mitt are being given free-time to go back and forth at each other.
Another question for Fred … twice now he has basically said “too bad” to people who are struggling and losing their jobs, because that’s the price paid for a dynamic economy.
Now McCain says the current tax system is unfair …. not what he said earlier.
Another question for Romney. 20+ minutes since Huckabee had a question.
Another Rudy question. Tick, tick, tick …
(interesting how they have them lined up on stage … Rudy, Fred, Mitt, John in the middle … Mike and Rp on their right. Tom, Duncan, Sam to their left). I am so sick of the MSM.
Mike got to jump in with a need for FAIR trade and not just Free trade … free trade that is not fair is what is killing the jobs of the American people.
McCain wants free trade no matter what (he didn’t seem concerned with it being fair).
Tancredo said no to Dubai owning 20% of NASDAQ. He said he’d consider letting them buy Walmart (not exactly sure what he was going for with that comment).
Another Fred question … why does he look like he is peering over the top of reading glasses when he is wearing no glasses?
Break time. 4:42 pm. Huckabee has spoken twice in 42 minutes.
Question for Fred before the break. Another question for Fred after the break (this time about Iraq). 4:46pm.
4:50pm. Still waiting.
Sam Brownback getting in a promo for his Iowa “dog and pony show” he’s putting on with Sen Biden.
4:51pm another question for Fred. tick, tick, tick, tick … anyone surprised that Chris Matthews is running the debate this way? The questions to Fred so far are hardly challenging.
4:53pm … now to Mitt.
Group question about needing congressional approval for a targeted attack …
Hunter … depends on window of opportunity
Paul … absolutely, not allowed to go to war without congress approval (the question had nothing to do with declaring war)
Huckabee … A president has to do whatever is necessary to protect the American people … if there’s time you go to congress, if not you protect the American people. Chris asked him “what if congress says no?” … Huckabee’s response was, it is more important to me that I, as President do what is necessary to protect the American people and not allow millions to die while politics are going on in Washington.
Topic changes to Oil. First question to Rudy. Come on people … give this one to Huckabee … he’s the one with the plan to get us energy independent by the end of his second term!
5:06pm … waiting again, tick, tick, tick, tick, …
To Huckabee (still talking energy) … we must rush in and become energy independent, we can not take 30 years to do this. All options must be on the table … nuclear, bio, wind, coal, water, solar. We cannot take our energy problem into Goober and Gomer and let them fix it when they get time. We need to take the mentality of a Nascar pit crew and get it done well, and get it done quickly. We must stop depending on (and making them rich) countries that support terrorism for our energy needs.
How do Republicans win back the confidence of the American people?
RP – we have to bring all Americans home and stop subsidizing farmers and other nonsense.
MH – we must restore the optimism to let them know that we recognize the big problems and that we (I) have big ideas to change them. (In other words a little duct tape is not going to fix the problems and Mike Huckabee has the solutions!)
(is it just me, or does Mitt remind anybody else of game show host Wink Martindale?)
5:17pm … tick tick tick tick …
(I like Duncan Hunter … he would make a fantastic Sec. of Defense in Huckabee’s cabinet).
Tancredo answers “stop illegal immigration” no matter what the topic is.
5:19pm … commercial break
5:22pm …
5:23pm … we’re back.
Now on to social security.
First question to Fred (she said that Fred is the only one with specifics on how to address the problems with funding social security and medicare). 1. need growing economy; 2. let people provide for some of their own retirement. 3. index benefits to inflation instead of wages for future retirees. (Apparently he is the only one they’re going to let talk about social security).
5:28pm … tick tick tick tick … back to Mitt
Are unions good for America and answer it as if you are a member of a union?
MH – unions will become more prominent as the economy worsens, because they are the natural result of people saying “i can’t go from a $70,000 job to a $15,000 job and feed my family”. People will feel a need to have unions to protect their jobs and their wages.
5:34pm – still going down the line with the union question
5:35pm – to the auto industry. President Bush said the auto industry needs to produce a product that is relevant, rather than looking to Washington for help. Do you agree?
McCain – Yes, but we need to create a climate where health care costs are under control and social security is stable.
Another question to Fred …
Question to Rudy … 5:38pm. Question about policing the internet (Rudy – we should police the internet, but not tax it).
5:39pm … tick tick tick tick
To complain about the inequality of time and questions given to candidates, call CNBC at 1-877-251-5685
Commercial break, 5:40pm
5:44pm – they ask Huckabee to talk about SCHIP plan in just 30 seconds. The real answer is that individuals must be given the opportunity to control their own health care … not govt controlled, not insurance industry controlled, not business controlled.
Fred’s 30 second question sounds like something I had in Junior High civics class “what is the danger of a weak dollar?”
Will you support the Republican nominee without knowing who they are?
RP – no.
Tom – not if they do not truly carry the foundation of the Rep. party, no.
Sam – yes, I will support the rep. nominee
This is the lightning round … they put the clock on Huckabee, but not on Rudy.
5:52pm
Mitt – will support the nominee of the party. Mitt says this process is like an episode of Law and Order … a huge cast, conflict and Fred shows up at the end.
5:54 pm … “Sen. Thompson, who is the prime minister of Canada?”
UGH! I missed Huckabee’s question! (My basset hound had to go outside … what bad timing!)
Online Poll for who won the debate at: CNBC
Thanks to everybody who “watched” the debate here with me on the blog … it was fun chatting and complaining about airtime with you!
Let’s go out and make this a great “post-debate” for Mike Huckabee!

This is not fair at all! Mike’s not getting a fair amount of time to speak. The longer I watch the more my blood continues to boil.
onemom // October 9, 2007 at 5:00 pm
Right there boiling with you Brian. This is insane. Huckabee did just get a great answer in about protecting the citizens of the United States.
Cody // October 9, 2007 at 5:02 pm
the few times that Mike Did speak it sounds like he did great!! what’s your opinion kelly? was the crowd responsive to Mike?
Brian Donegan // October 9, 2007 at 5:02 pm
What’s even more frustrating is Blogger is not publishing anything that I am writing today. I am about to use my pillow as a punching bag.
Yes A great answer by Huckabee and notice how Huck is being asked questions with more scrutiny too. Everyone else is getting a pass.
onemom // October 9, 2007 at 5:05 pm
Cody … of course, as always, when Mike is given a chance to be heard, he articulates real ideas and comments that reach the American people where they live.
Brian – sorry about blogger. Don’t hit anything harder than a pillow! Yes, Huck gets challenged … he’s about the only that can respond to a challenge with intelligence.
Brian Donegan // October 9, 2007 at 5:13 pm
Great answer to the energy question that was finally thrown Mike’s way.
Cody // October 9, 2007 at 5:18 pm
Does it look like their going to have a text poll?
onemom // October 9, 2007 at 5:21 pm
Cody – nothing on a text poll (or any poll) yet. I’ll let you know if they say anything about one.

Yes…ask Fred the SS question….and lie about that he is the only one with a specific plan. I am getting to “Donald Duck” levels of frustration here. And yes I am not going to hit anything harder than a pillow.

Actually Mitt reminds me of Tom Brokaw. They have the same accent.
R George // October 9, 2007 at 5:48 pm
Would someone like to do a project. Watch the rerun of the debate on Msnbc having one person record the time each candidate used in the debate and another person record who asked direct questions to who first and how many times.
Brian Donegan // October 9, 2007 at 5:51 pm
unfortunately I don’t have MSNBC
Tricia // October 9, 2007 at 5:53 pm
pray for Mike and call 1-877-251-5685 to complain to CNBC viewer services that Mike is not getting fair air time. We want MIKE!

Guys, don’t sweat the TV time.
The media giveth, and the media taketh away.
MH has hit all his marks today.
No worries.

There is an online poll on CNBC’s website. It’s a link off the front page.
by the way…Ron Paul is ahead…let’s take some action and put Huckabee FIRST!
Brian Snow // October 9, 2007 at 6:08 pm
The results of the CNBC post-debate poll:
1. Which candidate’s supporters don’t have jobs?
79%: Ron Paul
2. Which candidate’s supporters live in their mother’s basement?
81%: Ron Paul
3. Which candidate’s supporters maxed out their credit cards to raise campaign money?
92%: Ron Paul
R George // October 9, 2007 at 6:21 pm
Ron Paul’s numbers are being supported by democrat hacks.
NOtice how the Governor is doing with the rest of the so called leaders.

Mike missed the chance to highlight his I.A.M. union endorsement during the union question. I think Chris handed him an opportunity to stand apart from the rest of the field and he fumbled the ball. On a sidenote for the christian fense-sitters, praying for a sign. You got it two months ago I.A.M. has endorsed Huckabee as a physical sign of an I AM endorsement.
Larry // October 9, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Does anyone know of a place to watch the debate online? I just got home from work and I don’t have a TV to start with.
R George // October 9, 2007 at 7:59 pm
you have a web site for IAM
R George // October 9, 2007 at 8:13 pm
IAM ( http://www.goiam.org/content.cfm?cID=11168 ) International Association of Machinist posted this abstracted from the website above:
‘Buffenbarger also praised the former Arkansas Republican Governor, who addressed the IAM National Staff Conference this week. “Mike Huckabee was the only Republican candidate with the guts to meet with our members and the only one willing to figure out where and how we might work together,” said Buffenbarger. “He is entitled to serious consideration from our members voting in the upcoming Republican primaries.”
According to a recent survey of Machinists Union members, one-third votes Republican and two-thirds vote Democratic. “The dual endorsement is intended to involve all IAM members in the upcoming election,” said Buffenbarger. “It is fitting for the union whose early members gave birth to Labor Day to reach beyond traditional partisan boundaries to establish new relationships for the benefit of all working Americans.
“In collective bargaining, we look for partners who will work with us, strategic partners with whom we can cultivate common ground over the arc of time,” said Buffenbarger.
The endorsements will trigger a massive education campaign among IAM members and extensive publicity in union publications and websites nationwide. Twenty-five states with over 450,000 active and retired IAM members will vote in the three weeks starting with the Iowa caucuses and ending with the polls closing in California on February 5th.’ end quote
Though this union’s web site is very liberal, their approach to their membership is enlightening. And from what the 1/3 membership of republicans declared is that Huckabee is the best candidate for labor and for this Nation.

My take on the debate, even if I didn’t get to see it live « My Take // October 9, 2007 at 10:53 pm
[...] time he deserves to answer the questions. Fact is, I was trying to keep up with the debate via One Mom’s live blogging and I was beginning to wonder if the moderator was even going to ask him a question. [...]
theScoundrel // October 10, 2007 at 12:03 am
The media is not going to give Huckabee reindeer game playing time. It is that simple if you look at what has happened so far. If Huckabee wants to force the issue he would do well to keep playing ball after they leave the field. Let him take the questions asked write out his answers, which gives him time to answer correctly, and post them on the Internet Blogs. Heck start a Huckabee Debate Blog where he posts complete thought out answers and let everyone post links to the site at the blogs they visit. The media is not going to give him time unless he forces them to take notice. That is what RPaul has done. He has used Internet fans to force the media to pay attention.
DR // October 10, 2007 at 12:08 am
Great job today, keep it up, you are definitely helping the campaign.
Thomas J // October 10, 2007 at 12:45 am
Hey OneMom, (and everyone else reading this)
I’ve posted this at least once on the Mike Huckabee site. Mike really needs to get in on this:
http://www.myspace.com/election2008
I just finished watching the tail end of the live streaming of the John Edwards feature tonight. Mike would excell in this platform… but he’s not on the list! I’m writing this here since so far it seems that OneMom is a pretty influential blogger.
Mary T // October 10, 2007 at 11:56 am
Seems like the moderators want to ask the slick politicians all the questions. Mike does not come off as a politician but a human with a heart and the common sense to stop the bleeding.
